Can running make my legs bigger?

I have recently started running using a training program I found online that outlined how to get from "couch to 5K" in 8 weeks. I followed it carefully and since completing it in June have been running 3 miles, 3 times per week. Although I really enjoy running I am a bit disappointed in my weight results. I was not running to loose weight (at the start I was 128 and 5'9"). I feel my body is more toned than before. However my jeans no longer fit me in the bottom - they are too small!! I had the same thing happen 10 years ago and quit running and then fit into my jeans again. But now I am older and running for different reasons and will not be quitting. We do not have a scale and I have no idea how much I weigh, but I know I am larger in circumference because my clothes do not fit. This is a bit frustrating to me. Any advice that you could offer would be very helpful. Thank you in advance.

I believe there are 2 possible reasons why this is happening.

First of all working out will defiantly gives you a bigger appetite because you're body will crave more calories to help replenish energy stores.

If you eat too many of the wrong foods you could possible gain weight even though you're working out.

Runners are notorious for overdosing on carbohydrates because they know that their bodies depend on these foods to give them energy to complete their workouts.

I've seen more than my share of runners downing hot dogs and other junk foods 15 minutes after finishing a 5k. because they figure working out will burn off anything they eat. This is not always the case. The bottom line is those of us who work out can treat ourselves to the foods we love but running a 5k doesn't give us a free pass to eat whatever we want for seven days straight.

If you're not eating junk foods you may still have increased you're caloric intake without even realizing it causing you're weight to increase.

Secondly if you were inactive before staring you're workout routine you're muscles were probably weak and small.

Starting any type of workout regime will wake them up and force them to grow. Don't get me wrong you won't end up looking like Mr. Olympia but if you're still carrying a lot of fatty tissue you may be tricked into thinking you're bulking up.

As I've mentioned in previous articles bulk is nothing more than muscle with fat on top. The idea is to shed the body fat and expose the lean muscle that's underneath.

This can be done by adding in 3 days of weight training and paying particular attention to your diet.
