10-18-08// Working Out on Empty Stomachs
Does working out on an empty stomach help burn fat?

Chris:
I've often heard that getting up early in the morning going to the gym and working out on an empty stomach is one of the best ways to burn fat because the lack of calories forces the body to use fat for energy. What do you think about this? Is this technique really worth trying?

Karen

Karen:

Would you drive you're car on a 2 hour trip if it were on empty without first filling up the tank?

I didn't think so!

Then why would you go to the gym and workout for 2 hours without fueling you're body.

Eating breakfast gives you the energy you need to get an intense workout. Intense workouts build quality muscle, boost the metabolism and burn fat.

Failure to east breakfast puts you at a major disadvantage and could be potentially dangerous.

First of all if don't eat in the morning you're body will be forced to conserve calories by slowing down you're metabolism. This means the food you eat won't be easily burnt as energy.

Remember you're body doesn't know how much food is in the refrigerator; instead it reacts to how often it's fed. It's much more efficient to eat frequent small meals than it is to only eat 2-3 times a day. In my opinion breakfast is the most important meal of the day so don't skip it.

Forgetting to eat breakfast before working out could also cause physical problems. You may even become dizzy, disoriented or even possible lose consciousness. If you think I'm exaggerating about this just ask any experienced trainer if they've ever witnessed this phenomenon. I'll bet they'll have a couple good stories to tell you.

Over the years I've witnessed countless people passing out on the gym floor because they jumped out of bed with good intentions, and went to the gym without eating. Big mistake! They started out their workouts with an empty tank and eventually their bodies ran out of gas. Situations like these could be prevented.

Imagine that. You get up early with the hope of getting a great workout and the next thing you know you wake up on the floor next to the leg press machine. Not exactly what I would call a fun day.

So the next time you think about hitting the gym without first eating breakfast consider the consequences. You might get away with it for a while but eventually it will catch up with you.

You will also make better progress if you fuel you're body before you take that trip to the gym
