Are diet sodas on the foods to avoid list?

Chris:
My wife really enjoys your column. We both are active and try to eat right. I however drink diet caffeine free sodas. Do my sodas rank as high on the foods to avoid as regular sodas? Thanks.

Larry

Larry:
There are much greater sins than drinking diet sodas. I enjoy drinking them myself on occasion. I think the magic word here is moderation. It’s ok to drink sodas but don’t over do it.

The simple fact is there is no substitute for water. If you drink diet sodas all day you certainly aren’t getting enough water. This means you will eventually experience some degree of dehydration.

Dehydration can causes a host of negative side effects that can derail your workouts and endanger your health. These side effects include injuries, decreased energy levels and headaches. Dehydration can even impair your ability to burn fat properly

Keep in mind sodas that contain caffeine act as a diuretic and further dehydrate your body.

Remember you will never reach your potential if you’re not drinking enough water. Loading up on too many sodas, coffee or other drinks can cause you to neglect your water intake needs. Diet sodas are a much better choice than regular sodas. As long as you drink them in moderation I’ll keep them off the foods to avoid list.
