03-07-07// Supplements
What supplements would you recommend to help me stay in shape?
Chris:
I am a 41 year old male that has been working out on and off
for years. During this time I have tried all the newest supplements
that have come and gone on the fitness scene. Some of the
supplements seemed to give short term gains while others
were a complete waist of my hard earned money.
These days I am more interested in staying lean and healthy than building huge bulky muscles. Are there any supplements that you feel are worth spending money on? Do you have any recommendations that could help me achieve my goals?
Paul
Paul:
When it comes to supplements I believe in the basics. You won’t
ever hear me telling my clients to go out and get the newest
fat burner or miracle muscle builder. I only suggest basic supplements
that have been scientifically proven to help people stay in shape
without offering false promises and putting their health at risk.
Here are a few suggestions that I discuss with all of my clients upon starting a workout program. Try adding them to you’re training regiment to help you achieve you’re goals.
Supplement your training with a multi vitamin. I can’t tell you how many dedicated fitness buffs fail to include the most basics supplement off them all; a good old fashioned multi vitamin. It’s important to remember that as you train you are causing a lot of stress to you’re body. In order to recuperate you will need a good nutrition plan to repair your muscles. Since it’s almost impossible to get all of you’re daily nutrients from food alone, a good multi vitamin can be the insurance policy you need to keep your body strong and healthy.
Add flaxseed oil. The biggest urban legend in the fitness industry today is the belief that all fat is bad for you. In fact any diet that aims to cut out fat all together is an unhealthy diet. The truth of the matter is that you’re body needs certain types of fats to function correctly. Flaxseed oil is a good fat that helps maintain healthy skin, hair, nails and joints. It will also elevate you’re metabolism by providing your body with a fast burning fuel that wont stick to you’re ribs.
Supplement your diet with a protein drink. You’re body needs protein to build, repair and maintain muscle. Failure to eat enough protein could cause you’re workouts to do more damage to you’re body than good. It’s important to remember that a person with more muscle mass will automatically burn more calories without lifting a finger than someone with less muscle. Therefore it only makes sense to keep a protein supplement close by to insure you’re getting you’re daily protein requirements.
Supplement your diet with extra water. I am well aware that most people don’t consider water to be a supplement but I do. Drinking enough water is essential for anyone who works out on a daily basis. As you increase you’re activity levels you increase you’re need to hydrate you’re body. If you don’t drink enough water you’re performance in the gym will suffer greatly.
It’s important to remember that most of the miracle supplements on the market today have only been tested in the short term. Who knows what they will do to you’re body twenty years from now. I suggest sticking to the basics that have been scientifically proven to help you get in shape without causing health problems in the future.
