11-29-06// Choosing a Trainer
How do I choose a trainer?
Chris:
In the past I have taken it upon myself to stay in shape but every since I turned 30 I have found it much more difficult. For the first time in my life I am considering hiring a personal trainer. The problem is that I don't know where to start. There are so many different types of trainers it's hard to make a decision. My first instinct is to choose a trainer that looks the way I would like to look. The way I figure it if they are in good shape they are obviously doing something right. What are your thoughts on this?
What advice would you give someone that is choosing a trainer for the first time?
John
John:
There is no doubt in my mind that choosing the right trainer can make the difference between success and failure. That’s why it’s important to take several things into consideration before making your final decision. Here are some thoughts on what to look for and what to stay away from.
Choose a motivator. I don’t care how smart you are or where you got your training credentials from if you’re not good with people you will never get your message across. A good trainer should be someone you can relate to. They should be able to get you to do things you wouldn’t do on your own. As soon as you get close to reaching your goal they are already planning your next conquest.
Choose someone with a good reputation. Take the time to ask people around the gym who they believe would be a good choice. If you already have a trainer in mind talk to some of the people he or she is already training. Ask them why they chose this person to be their trainer. Good trainers will have a long list of successful clients that will be willing to tell their story to you. All you have to do is ask.
Choose a life coach. A good trainer should not only put you through tough workouts but they should take your entire lifestyle in consideration. They should help you make a plan for success that is best for you. Good trainers will want to discuss your diet, your work schedule, previous injuries or anything that could possible derail you from reaching your goal. I believe that the training starts long before you enter the gym and should continue well after the training session is over.
Beware of rep counters and clipboard holders. It’s easy to spot these people. They are the trainers that really aren’t paying much attention to what their clients are doing. They bring a clip board with the same old workout time after time. They pay little attention to proper form and could care less if your getting results as long as you’re still writing the checks.
Don’t fall for quick fixes or gimmicky exercises. Some trainers will try to get your attention by dazzling you with special workouts and fancy exercises. Don’t fall for it. Pick someone that understands the science behind working out. Allow them to teach you the basics first before they decide to train you like a pro athlete.
Watch out for profiteers. These are the people that became trainers because they believe its easy money. Most of these people have little to no experience themselves. They started lifting a couple of years ago and figured anyone can become a trainer as long as they can pass an online test. These people often try to sell themselves to get clients instead of relying on their reputation.
In my opinion the best trainers are the ones that have learned through experience. They know how to motivate people and are willing to do whatever it takes to help you achieve your goals.
