How do I get rid of my belly?

Hello Chris,
I am 58 years old, and my wife is 53. I have been weight training off and on for years. However, the past two years I have gotten my wife into it, and we have been training religiously. We do weights on Monday and Thursday, and cardio on Tuesday and Friday. We have been keeping our calorie intake down. I dropped from 192 to 171 and from 37 inch waist to 32. My wife went from 162 to 141, and is stronger. My question to you is my wife’s inability to get rid of her “belly.” She’s having trouble losing that pouch, and we’re hoping you might have a suggestion. She does crunches and leg raises and I know her abs are strong. Any ideas?

Dan C.

Dear Dan,
First of all let me congratulate you on your progress. It sounds like you are both on the right track. However I do think there are some things that you can change that will help your wife reach her goal of a flatter stomach. The one thing that she must understand is that everyone has at least one trouble spot. These trouble spots respond slower than the rest of the body. For many women the so called trouble spot is the lower abdominals. One reason for this is because women stretch their abdominal muscles during pregnancy. It’s important to remember that your trouble spot will be the last area to tone up when you’re starting to get into shape. In other words it might take a little more time and effort to get to where you want to be.

Try super charging your work out by adding an extra day of weight training and a couple of days of cardio. Start with a three day weight training split. Divide your work out into three days per week. Work 2-3 different body parts per day with one day of rest between each work out. This will help to jump start you metabolism. You body will need more calories to function and you will begin to burn fat as a source of fuel.

You will also need to add more cardio. Two days have worked great for you just imagine what four to five days will do. This deadly combination will turn you bodies into a furnace that will burn the hard to loose subcutaneous fat that your bodies are holding. Continue to do abdominals three days a week with one days rest in between. Be sure to add a couple of repetitions every couple of weeks as the abs become stronger. Make sure you don’t sacrifice form for a few extra reps. Remember there is no magic exercise that will tone the abs. Try them all. As you body begins to loose fat you will look leaner and your wife’s stomach will become tighter.

This may seem like a lot of time to the average person.
Sometimes you have to work a little harder to burn the subcutaneous fat that has taken years to accumulate.

The good news is that you won’t have to keep this pace up forever. Once you have reached your goal you can cut the cardio back to what I like to call a matenence program. You may only need three days of cardio a week instead of five days.
